Goodbye, Hair Loss

Hair loss due to stress is exacerbated by changing seasons and erratic weather. Hair moisture levels become unstable and they become crumbly and lifeless. Women in their 20s often view hair loss as a trivial issue because of their youth, only to realise in the future that they face the fear of going bald. Reasons for hair loss include stress, excessive coloring, a sudden change in diet, and in some cases, disease or genetic factors.

Take a look at your dressing table – does it only contain skincare products and none for haircare? If so, then the clumps of hair found on your bathroom floor are an inevitable result of a lack of proper haircare. But hair loss can be treated if dealt with properly. Firstly, it is important to see your hair as an extension of your scalp - a healthy scalp equates to healthy hair. Define the composition of your haircare products and determine if they suit your needs, just like how you would with your cosmetic items. Ensure that you are washing and drying your hair in the correct manner as advised by your hairstylist and most importantly, do not hesitate to seek help from experts.

Scalp and hair

Women in their 20s are often troubled by the perplexing issue of a greasy scalp and dry hair. A greasy scalp is caused by overactive sebaceous glands, which are in turn caused by stress. At the same time, nutrients secreted from the scalp are not transmitted to the hair itself, resulting in dry, lifeless hair. To treat this problem, use a shampoo that contain gentle yet effective cleansing properties to target the greasy scalp. Then, ensure that your haircare products contain high amounts of protein which will help nourish the hair.

Wear a hat when outdoors

Dust particles can easily seep into pores, blocking them and causing hair loss. It is therefore helpful to put on a hat or headscarf when outdoors. Once indoors, brush your hair to ensure that your hair is free from unwanted pollutants.

Adjust your diet

A study by the University of Chicago showed that excessive consumption of meat resulted in higher levels of male hormones, which in turn caused faster rates of hair loss. On the other hand, foods such as black sesame and black beans that contain vegetable oil and a particular compound called Isoflavones aid in preventing hair loss. Nutrients such as protein, calcium, iodine and vitamin E are also helpful. Other foods that have been proven to aid in hair loss are: seaweed, carrots, pumpkin, spinach, tomatoes, tuna, egg yolks, soy milk, celery, and seafood.

Check the ingredients in your shampoo and conditioner

Many consumers purchase shampoos and conditioners that are labelled as “natural”, thinking that they are wholly made of organic compounds when in fact, these “natural” ingredients such as herbal extracts only constitute 3% of the product. It is therefore important that you check your haircare products for the following compounds that should be avoided: SLES(Sodium lauryl ether sulfate), SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) and DEA (cocamide diethanolamine). These chemicals, which are also present in washing detergents, will not only irritate your scalp, but also contain cancerous properties.
