Hair Care Tips For Tropical Climate

Hello, this is hairstylist Edward Kim and I am going to provide you with useful information on hair. The strong sunlight in Singapore affects not only the skin but also the scalp, and I have seen numerous clients having scalp problems. How do we protect our scalp and hair from the long exposure to UV-rays in tropical climate?

Scalp is also part of the skin, thus it can be classified into dry and oily types. Firstly, healthy scalp and hair can be maintained by washing your hair at least once a day to get rid of the sweat, dandruff and dust accumulated during the day. Hair is easily damaged when the pores are clogged with sweat and dandruff, so it is recommended that those with oily scalp should wash their hair once in the morning and once in the evening. Those with normal scalp should wash their hair thoroughly at least once a day. It is also important to dry your hair and scalp completely before going to sleep to avoid growing bacteria, which could further damage your hair and scalp.

One common mistake that people with scalp problems make is that they do not dry their hair after washing their hair. If you are running for time, I recommend that at least the scalp and the hair near scalp should be dried. This is especially relevant to those with long hair, where a considerable amount of time is taken to dry their hair. Use the hair dryer not only to dry the hair near the scalp but also to give some volume to the hair. Killing two birds with one stone!

For dry scalp, it gets very flakey and results in itchiness. It is important to wash off the shampoo on the scalp thoroughly. Drying the hair without completely washing off would be the top reason for the occurrence of dandruff. It is also important to keep hydrated by drinking lots of water and complement your diet with milk, tofu, seaweed, meat, fish and egg for various vitamins, protein and minerals. Using hair tonic products is another good way to protect your scalp from drying out.

For healthier hair and scalp, it is also vital to regularly provide treatment. Working adults who tend to have less time could choose to use treatment products at home or massage their scalps manually. It is not necessary to visit professional masseurs or hair salons for the maintenance of hair and scalp health. Choosing the right products is critical. Regular home care may not be easy but this would keep the hair and scalp hydrated, preventing the sunlight from damaging them.

People also tend to use normal, commercial shampoos without understanding the type of their hair and scalp. Those commercial shampoos we see everyday in supermarkets could have stronger cleansing power but could also be irritating for sensitive scalp. Shampoos better suited for different types of scalp/hair should be used in place of the normal ones.

Trees and plants grow better on good soil; hair grows better on good scalp. Many of the food in Singapore tend to be oily, and such diet would result in oily scalp as the sebum produced from the pores increases. Constant exposure to such diet would consequently change the type of your scalp/hair. Those with oily types of scalp should try to cut down oily food and do not forget to wash the hair twice a day with shampoos customized for oily scalp.

It is difficult to change the type of your scalp/hair, so we should focus on prevention, rather than tackling the problem after it has occurred.

Hair Color That Suit Your Skin Tone by Edward Kim

Hello, I am hairstylist Edward. Today, I would like to discuss about the hair color that suits different skin tones. If you are thinking of changing your hair color and unsure of what color to change to, my article can be useful for you. Take my article as a reference and wish you all the best with choosing new hair color!

Firstly, Asian skin tones can be classified into 4 types: fair skin tone, dark skin tone, reddish skin tone and yellowish skin tone.

Image: Kim Hee-sun
For Koreans, majority of them have fair skin tone. This is partially due to many of them using products like BB cream that has started trending a few years ago. This does not exclude men, and I have noticed that a lot of them have generally fair skin. Such fair skin tones can actually accommodate any color. If the skin is slightly reddish, colors like red-brown or wine-red would be great. Otherwise, you can also try pink-brown color, which has been gaining popularity recently. However, if the skin is the ‘cooler’ fair tone, blue-black or dark purple would look better. Since fair skins suit any hair color overall, you can choose a color that suits your personality and mood. Bright colors can give cute and cheerful feel, while dark colors give elegance and classy aura.

Next, there is dark skin tone, and one well-known Korean celebrity with such skin is Lee Hyo-ri. For those with dark skins, you can look healthy and active. However, if your hair color is too bright, your skin will be contrasted excessively and end up looking dull. Therefore, you should avoid bleaching your hair or dyeing in too bright a color. Instead, colors with medium brightness such as dark orange or copper-brown will be the best. Orange can give sexier look compared to normal brown color. Surprisingly, many of the female idol groups choose to dye black even with dark skin tones. Examples are Hyorin from Sistar and Hyeri from Girl’s Day. It can give strong and lasting impressions. Also, do take note that you would have to bleach your hair if you wish to dye with another color after dyeing your hair black! Bleaching is very damaging to the hair condition as well.

Next, we have reddish skin tone. It is a warm-toned skin, so it is best to do cool-toned colors rather than warm-toned. If the hair color were to be similarly reddish or orange, it would accentuate the redness of the skin tone. Thus, it is best to avoid reddish-brown, wine-red or pink-brown colors. Cool-toned colors like khaki-brown or ash-brown subtly contain bluish tone underneath, which would help minimize the redness of the skin tone.

Lastly, yellowish skin tone. Asians are supposedly the ‘yellow-skinned’ race and thus many Asians are actually born with yellowish skin tone. With such skin tones, black and dark hair can bring out the oriental feel but may accentuate the yellow tone of the face. I would definitely recommend dark-brown over black and light brown over dark-drown. This would brighten the facial skin tone. If you wish to try self-coloring at home, beware that the color on the roots may turn out slightly lighter due to body temperature. To avoid uneven coloring, it would be better to visit hair salons.

This was Edward Kim, and I will come back with more useful articles in the future.

Best Hair Color For Your Complexion

Much like shoes, your hair color can work for you or against you. And it instantly can change how you look entirely.

So today, DuSol Beauty is going to teach you how to match up your complexion with the best hair colors.

Most of you already know if your skin tone is fair, medium, olive or dark... But it is also important to determine your natural skin undertone.

Hold out your wrists under direct sunlight and look at your blood vessels. If they are greenish, you have a warm skin tone. If they have a bluish tint to them, you have a cool skin tone.

From here on, choosing the color to make you look your best is simply a piece of cake!

If you are warm-fair... your peachy skin will look absolutely perfect against warmer shades of the blonde range. The combination of colors will give you a very radiant and youthful appearance.

If you are cool-fair... With such porcelain skin, you need colors that will give you a striking definition. We recommend a strong color like red!

If you are warm-medium... go for blonde or brown shades and throw in some highlights if you feel you want to have that little oomph! They will inject your look with plenty of life and brighten up your whole face instantly.

If you are cool-medium... heat up your look with some warm blond or brown shades that will work well with your rosy undertone. Try asking your stylist for those colors with ashy undertones.

If you are warm-olive... really bring out the enchantment of your warm skin with shades of dark brown! But it is important not to go jet black; you still want that bit of lightness to balance the color tones out.

If you are cool-olive... opt for reddish-brown shades that will complement your green-ish undertone very well and instantly give you a brighter look.

If you are warm-dark... choose from a range of rich-brown shades. Fill up those tresses with warm colors that will not contradict for natural skin tone, but enhance it instead.

If you are cool-dark... you can even out the colors on your face with deep dark colors. They will give your a very 'natural beauty' look, while still bouncing off colors that will give you very soft contours on your visage.

Goodbye, Hair Loss

Hair loss due to stress is exacerbated by changing seasons and erratic weather. Hair moisture levels become unstable and they become crumbly and lifeless. Women in their 20s often view hair loss as a trivial issue because of their youth, only to realise in the future that they face the fear of going bald. Reasons for hair loss include stress, excessive coloring, a sudden change in diet, and in some cases, disease or genetic factors.

Take a look at your dressing table – does it only contain skincare products and none for haircare? If so, then the clumps of hair found on your bathroom floor are an inevitable result of a lack of proper haircare. But hair loss can be treated if dealt with properly. Firstly, it is important to see your hair as an extension of your scalp - a healthy scalp equates to healthy hair. Define the composition of your haircare products and determine if they suit your needs, just like how you would with your cosmetic items. Ensure that you are washing and drying your hair in the correct manner as advised by your hairstylist and most importantly, do not hesitate to seek help from experts.

Scalp and hair

Women in their 20s are often troubled by the perplexing issue of a greasy scalp and dry hair. A greasy scalp is caused by overactive sebaceous glands, which are in turn caused by stress. At the same time, nutrients secreted from the scalp are not transmitted to the hair itself, resulting in dry, lifeless hair. To treat this problem, use a shampoo that contain gentle yet effective cleansing properties to target the greasy scalp. Then, ensure that your haircare products contain high amounts of protein which will help nourish the hair.

Wear a hat when outdoors

Dust particles can easily seep into pores, blocking them and causing hair loss. It is therefore helpful to put on a hat or headscarf when outdoors. Once indoors, brush your hair to ensure that your hair is free from unwanted pollutants.

Adjust your diet

A study by the University of Chicago showed that excessive consumption of meat resulted in higher levels of male hormones, which in turn caused faster rates of hair loss. On the other hand, foods such as black sesame and black beans that contain vegetable oil and a particular compound called Isoflavones aid in preventing hair loss. Nutrients such as protein, calcium, iodine and vitamin E are also helpful. Other foods that have been proven to aid in hair loss are: seaweed, carrots, pumpkin, spinach, tomatoes, tuna, egg yolks, soy milk, celery, and seafood.

Check the ingredients in your shampoo and conditioner

Many consumers purchase shampoos and conditioners that are labelled as “natural”, thinking that they are wholly made of organic compounds when in fact, these “natural” ingredients such as herbal extracts only constitute 3% of the product. It is therefore important that you check your haircare products for the following compounds that should be avoided: SLES(Sodium lauryl ether sulfate), SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) and DEA (cocamide diethanolamine). These chemicals, which are also present in washing detergents, will not only irritate your scalp, but also contain cancerous properties.
